What we do
The Giving Shelf is a youth-led nonprofit that collects gently used books from teachers, libraries, and community members — then places them into the hands of people experiencing homelessness across Metro Detroit. Because reading is comfort, education, and hope, and everyone deserves access to it.

We believe every book has the power to inspire, educate, and comfort. The Giving Shelf works to place donated books into the hands of children and families with limited access to books, creating opportunities for learning, imagination, and hope.
Why books matter
A book is a quiet companion. It offers escape, learning, and the dignity of choosing what you read. For someone navigating hardship, that small autonomy can mean everything.
How we collect
We partner mainly with community members, plus teachers and libraries clearing shelves. Gently used books of every genre — fiction, non-fiction, kids' titles, poetry — all welcome.
How we distribute
Donations are sorted, then delivered directly to shelters and outreach organizations across Detroit — including Covenant House Michigan, Cass Community Social Services, and Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries.
